Grounds to Growth
Compost Cab is proud to introduce the Grounds to Growth program, opening to businesses nationwide in early 2013. Grounds to Growth is designed for restaurants in general, and cafes and coffee shops in particular. You DO NOT need to be in Washington DC or a Compost Cab subscriber to be Grounds to Growth certified.
Composting, as we hope is abundantly clear as you explore compostcab.com, is in its most basic form the combining of carbon (woodchips, yard trimmings, etc.) and nitrogen (food scraps). Coffee grounds, as you may or may not know, are absolutely one of the best forms of nitrogen for composting. Small, granular, easy to transport, and about two percent nitrogen by weight, coffee grounds effectively replace nutrient-rich manure as a terrific source of nitrogen in an urban environment.
Right now the vast majority of all coffee grounds produced commercially take a long, sad trip to the landfill, where they’ll decompose anaerobically and throw off methane to warm the planet. But it doesn’t need to be this way. Grounds to Growth exists to make sure that coffee grounds are put to their best and highest use: growing new food.
